Case #3: The Stolen Heirloom

🕵️‍♂️ It's the Case of the Week series!

We need your help to solve this case!

🔎 THE CASE

The Whitmore family is in crisis. A priceless diamond necklace, passed down for generations, vanished from the family safe one quiet evening. The safe was locked, and the alarm hadn’t gone off.

The only people in the mansion at the time:

  1. Eleanor Whitmore, the matriarch – claimed she was reading in the library.

  2. James Whitmore, her son – said he was napping in his room.

  3. Clara Whitmore, her daughter – said she was practicing piano in the music room.

  4. Mr. Lewis, the butler – said he was polishing silverware in the dining hall.

Detective Harris noticed several curious details:

  • Clue 1: The safe had a tiny smudge on the combination dial.

  • Clue 2: Piano sheet papers were scattered on the music room floor.

  • Clue 3: A half-empty glass of water was on the dining table, but the silverware was still perfectly arranged.

  • Clue 4: Eleanor’s book was open, but the pages were slightly wrinkled, as if someone had rushed past it.

Each person stuck to their story, but Harris knew the thief had to be inside the house, because:

  • The alarm didn’t go off.

  • There was no forced entry.

  • Nothing else in the house was touched.

🔹 PAUSE AND THINK

Who stole the necklace? Think carefully about the clues:

  1. Who had access to the safe’s combination?

  2. Which clues suggest someone wasn’t where they claimed to be or acted suspiciously?

  3. What tiny details might reveal a hurried or careless thief?

🔹 SOLUTION

The thief was Clara Whitmore, the daughter.

  • Smudge on the safe dial: Clara knew the combination because she often spent time in her mother’s room, where it was memorized.

  • Scattered piano sheets: She pretended to practice piano, but dropped the sheets in her hurry, creating a distraction.

  • Other clues: Eleanor’s wrinkled book and the undisturbed silverware show the others were telling the truth, while the small details showed that Clara was behind it all.

Clara had planned to steal the necklace while making it look like she was busy practicing, but the tiny smudge and dropped sheets gave her away.
